Horse Passport Laws have been in force since 2005 and were updated through the Horse Passport Regulations 2009 . This law requires all horses, ponies and donkeys to have a passport which will identify the animal and its owner. Therefore if you have bought a horse that already has a passport you must register your ownership within 30 days.
Horse meat is eaten across Europe. Many veterinary medicines we would like to use to treat our animals are harmful to humans. The passport and microchip identifies your horse and by signing Part II of Section IX contained within the passport you can stop your animal from entering the food chain and enable your vet to treat the animal with a wide range of veterinary medicines that are not available to horses intended for slaughter for human consumption.
The Horse Passport Agency has issued over 165,000 passports and is the largest identity passport issuer.
