What happens in the case of death of the animal by natural causes or an accident?
If the animal dies then the passport must be returned to the issuing office:

The Horse Passport Agency does not charge a fee but does require the following information :

If your animal has been sent to the slaughter house then your passport must go with the animal and then it is the duty of the slaughter house to ensure that the passports are sent back to the issuing organisation.
